SSRI media interest stimulates the reporting of adverse suicidal reactions

7.4.2 Suicidal thoughts and self-harm

These analyses included the following terms which have been grouped under the overall term ‘suicidal thoughts and self-harm’: suicide accomplished, suicide attempt, suicidal ideation, aggravated suicidal ideation, parasuicide, non-accidental overdose and thoughts of self-harm. Data were analysed since marketing up to September 2003.

It is recognised that media interest can stimulate reporting through the Yellow Card Scheme, and the publicity surrounding the safety of fluoxetine in 1990 caused an increase in reporting of suicidal thoughts and self-harm associated with fluoxetine. There was also some effect on reporting rates for other SSRIs. The reporting rate of suicidal behaviour with fluoxetine then dropped between 1991 and 1993, and continued to fall gradually until 1998. In the years 1995 to 1998, the reporting rates for fluoxetine, paroxetine and sertraline were very similar, figure 7.2. This argues against this phenomenon being a particular adverse reaction to fluoxetine. Reporting rates for venlafaxine were comparatively higher between 1995 and 1998 (figure 7.3), although this coincides with the first few years of marketing of this drug. After 1998, reporting rates for venlafaxine fell to similar level as the other SSRIs.

Shelly Jofre was "given the space and resources to unravel an international drug company scandal" - anyone who claims she investigated all SSRI's is a LIAR !!

Shelley Jofre

Life as a Panorama reporter since 2000 has given me a unique opportunity to pursue investigations that really matter.
I have been given the space and resources to unravel an international drug company scandal that fundamentally questions how much faith we should put in the medicines we take.

The first film I made about GlaxoSmithKline's best-selling antidepressant, Seroxat, generated an unprecedented viewer response; a staggering 65,000 people rang the BBC helpline after the programme.

I was able to continue digging away at the story in three further films. These have resulted in a complete rethink of the drug's safety and effectiveness as well as an overhaul of the way patients report side effects from any prescription medicine.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/panorama/6229043.stm

The films won a Mental Health Media Award for Public Impact and were shortlisted for the Royal Television Society Awards in 2003.

GSK's liability might be $1billon but Pfizer's was $21 billion

clearly Pfizer is many times many many more times more culpable than GSK !! .........some people who are fixated on GSK need to get a grip on reality

"A liability totaling $1.5 billion is possible," Savvas Neophytou, a Panmure

Gordon analyst in London, wrote in a note to investors the day after the Kilker

verdict. He still recommended buying Glaxo shares because a likely appeal may

reduce the amount paid by the company.

In comparison, Pfizer Inc., parent of Wyeth, the maker of diet-drug combination

fen-phen, has had to set aside about $21 billion to resolve about 200,000

personal-injury claims over that medicine. Merck & Co. agreed to pay $4.85

billion to resolve more than 48,000 claims over the withdrawn painkiller.

3200 Seroxat claims settled out of court .....then case closed

Glaxo paid an average of about $50,000 per case to resolve about 3,200 claims linking Paxil to addiction problems, the people familiar with the cases said.

In its 2008 annual report, company officials noted they had reached a âconditional settlement agreementâ in January 2006 with Paxil users who alleged they suffered withdrawal symptoms after taking the drug. The case, filed in Los Angeles federal court, was marked closed in court records in February.

Glaxo Said to Have Paid $1 Billion to Settle Paxil/Seroxat Lawsuits

Bloomberg is reporting that GlaxoSmithKline has shelled out almost $1 billion to settle lawsuits over Paxil [Seroxat] since its introduction to the population in 1993. $390 million is reported to have been paid out to settle lawsuits regarding suicides or attempted suicides said to be linked to Glaxo's Paxil [Seroxat]

Seroxat side effects are the same as Zoton, Tramadol or even Dothiepin - no wonder then that Seroxat lawyers drop so many not so Atypical cases

http://bobfiddaman.blogspot.com/2009/12/side-effects-zoton-include-taste.html

Side effects - Zoton - include taste disturbances, dizziness, vertigo, confusion, blurred vision, hallucinations

Adverse Psychiatric Reactions Information Link
is a Registered UK Charity No 1072305

Information
ANTACID MEDICATION
ZOTON also known as LANSOPRAZOLE

Prevacid in USA and Canada is one of a group of drugs called

PROTON - PUMP INHIBITORS

If you have suffered a psychiatric adverse reaction to this drug please email us at reactions@april.org.uk
The UK Patient Information Leaflet which is found neatly tucked inside the box of tablets states under the heading 'After Taking your medicine’ Written in very small grey type, on pale yellow paper, it states:

"Occasionally ZOTON may cause side effects. Such side-effects do not usually last for long, However, please see your doctor if any of the following become severe to troublesome.

Headache, diarrhoea, stomach pain, feeling of sickness, vomiting, taste disturbances, dizziness, vertigo, confusion, blurred vision, hallucinations, feeling unwell, constipation, wind, dry or sore mouth or throat, tiredness, burning or prickling feeling, itching, hair thinning, muscle or joint pains, fluid retention, swelling, depression.

As with other acid reducing drugs, men taking lansoprazole may occasionally experience temporary breast swelling or impotence.

You should contact your doctor if you develop a rash. The majority of rashes are mild and self-limiting but sensitivity to sunlight and more severe blistering rashes have occurred rarely, which may require medical treatment.

You should see your doctor at once if you get a fever, any unexplained bruising or bleeding, extreme fatigue, difficulty in urinating, if your skin or whites of your eyes become more yellow than usual or if you experience symptoms of an allergic reaction such as shortness of breath or face swelling.

As natural acid in the stomach helps to kill bacteria, the lowering of acid by acid-reducing drugs such as ZOTON may make some people more liable to suffer from certain stomach infections. If you suffer from severe persistent diarrhoea and/ or vomiting whilst taking ZOTON you should consult your doctor.

Other side effects include kidney problems, inflammation of the liver or changes in kidney or liver function.

Please tell your doctor if you have any unwanted event not listed above."

Most Seroxat clients dropped because they were taking other drugs in conjunction with their paroxetine

The reason why there are only 600 or so claimaints left in the UK Seroxat class action against GSK is because many cases were dropped because of doctors prescribing other drugs in conjunction with Seroxat. I know personally of many people who have been dropped from the class action because of this and other factors...

Oh and by the way, Janice Simmons of the seroxatusersgroup met with UK prime minister Gordon Brown at downing street a few days ago. Bear in mind that there is currently a 4 year long investigation into the conduct of GSK regarding Seroxat prescribing to children/suppression of negative clinical data etc..

http://fiddaman.blogspot.com/2007/11/honourable-members.html

But bear in mind also that JP Garnier( GSK CEO) is also on "Gordon Browns Business Council"...
Also worthy of thought is what GSK means to the UK economy..
It is virtually an English institution with its roots firmly cemented in UK research/developement/sponsorship/employment etc..
It is the UK's Major Pharma Cash Cow..
And it is prized very much as being such...

Will be interesting when more info on this meeting begins to bear fruit...
But i have a feeling that the UK seroxat scandal is a can of worms which has been eating its way right through the core of UK politics for quite some time now...
And when something has become that rotten..
Most people won't touch it...

Why is there only 600 litigants when the Seroxat User Group claimed it had 10,000 members - asks Will @ Furious Seasons

I wonder why there were only 600 clients when it was very much the case that the "Online Seroxat Support Group" & "seroxatUSERSgroup" claimed they represented 10.000 + members.

Result of Seroxat placebo control trial on personality - note this trial was not funded by GSK

Results Patients who took paroxetine reported greater personality change than placebo patients, even after controlling for depression improvement (neuroticism, P < .001; extraversion, P = .002). The advantage of paroxetine over placebo in antidepressant efficacy was no longer significant after controlling for change in neuroticism (P = .46) or extraversion (P = .14). Patients taking paroxetine reported 6.8 times as much change on neuroticism and 3.5 times as much change on extraversion as placebo patients matched for depression improvement. Although placebo patients exhibited substantial depression improvement (Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression score, ¨C1.2 SD, P < .001), they reported little change on neuroticism (¨C0.18 SD, P = .08) or extraversion (0.08 SD, P = .50). Cognitive therapy produced greater personality change than placebo (P .01); but its advantage on neuroticism was no longer significant after controlling for depression (P = .14). Neuroticism reduction during treatment predicted lower relapse rates among paroxetine responders (P = .003) but not among cognitive therapy responders (P = .86).

Seroxat lawyers media machine makes matters worse for consumers of all other brands of SSRI

Steph & others reading your attention is drawn to

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/SSRI-Crusaders/message/34746

http://coventryuniversity.podbean.com/2007/11/01/one-woman-a-multinational-and-a-victory-shelley-jofre-panorama/

which is a podcast of Shelley Jofre speaking at Sheffield University date Nov 2007

from the transcript please note -

4 .30 in Ed says - lets look at antidepressant story

4 45 Jofre says although problems with whole class of antidepressants we (bbc) decided to concentrate on Seroxat Why we narrowed down on Seroxat 1 because it was made by GSK 2 all the drugs in class cause suicidal thinking on dose change 3 Seroxat had a unique problem of withdrawal BECAUSE IT WAS LONGER ACTING … we decided to focus research into this drug

So here we have it straight from the horses mouth that not only did the BBC know that there was a class wide problem with SSRI, they chose despite this knowledge, to focus research on seroxat !

Quite how the UK lawyers media machine can be seen as a help, to those seeking to bring awareness about all psychiatric drugs, when they, in the face of there own knowledge, decided to ignore the bulk of the problem (all drugs in class), is beyond comprehension.

The BBC is a public sector broadcaster responsible to all like me, who have no choice but to pay a tax (broadcasting licence) to them. So it comes with a sense of total bewilderment to learn from Jofre, that not only did Panorama take 8 months to make, but that the UK litigation lawyer was involved throughout the process!!

read transcript

6.00 in - 40 min Panorama film took Shelley Jofre 8 months to make

&

7.30 We were talking to the lawyer the whole way through production

So Steph here was prime opportunity to bring awareness about all SSRI's & the whole thing was ceeded to the only persons who will benefit ....the UK lawyers

So lets look again at what Jofre said @ 6:10

6.10 in - It's not something you do lightly WE WERE TAKING ON the worlds second largest drug company

Quite frankly Steph that is not something the BBC has a remit to do.

It has become partisan.

Remember whilst the BBC is fighting Hugh James' wars for them they (BBC) are by their own admission failing to help people who take brands other than Paxil/Seroxat .............i.e. the majority of the consumers.

.

The net result which is easy to show (from national statistics) is a dissaster.

BBC & Jofre should hang their head in shame.

Now I realise this won't lie easy with those of you who have met Jofre in person, so for those that know her, I suggest you invite her & her producer at Panorama to join the debate here at SSRIcrusaders.

I'll not hold my breath, as with the UK seroaxt caucus I don't expect that they are capable of self reflection.

The UK now has a runaway problem with several brands of antidepressants a regulator that is bogged down by seroxat "created issues", one that has failed to do its job to the detriment of anyone who takes an antidepressant NOT made by GSK

And you think this helps Steph?

Jeremy

(( note in writing this post I am not in anyway attempting to defend GSK ))

Wednesday 2 December 2009

BBC admits it knew there was a problem with the entire class of SSRI's, yet THEY targeted GSK product Seroxat !

2.30 in Jofre says - ” read a little bit in news paper about patients complaints” year 2000 about ” Seroxat difficult to withdraw from” .. Jofre found it intriguing Jofre had only just started working on Panorama at that stage
3.30 in ” Jofre calls SSRI’s “SELECTIVE Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors”
4.14 Jofre knew little of how the pharmcutical industry worked
4 .30 in Ed says - lets look at antidepressant story
4 45 Jofre says although problems with whole class of antidepressants we (bbc) decided to concentrate on Seroxat Why we narrowed down on Seroxat 1 because it was made by GSK 2 all the drugs in class cause suicidal thinking on dose change 3 Seroxat had a unique problem of withdrawal BECAUSE IT WAS LONGER ACTING … we decided to focus research into this drug

6.10 in - It’s not something you do lightly WE WERE TAKING ON the worlds second largest drug company
7.30 We were talking to the lawyer the whole way through production
9.30 in - Jofre says “we took a punt” on Dr David Healy

Anon Commenter is missing the point - MOST people, just weeks after cold turkey withdrawal COULDN'T go to a concert, many struggle for months, some for years and some are permanently disabled! Others have killed themselves!

There isn't many concerts that can leave one feeling completely satisfied - well not since the days of Acca Dacca and Big Country. But wait......... we have the Casbah Club, a five peice set of muso's who probably have a combined age nearing the 300 mark.

With a sense of great anticipation, after reviews on this board, I got into the spirit of things with my buddy Arun and met a few familiar faces. Was surprised to see so much merchandise on sale and even more suprised to see the Big Country wooly hats - only wish I would have bought more funds so I could have purchased one.
